Lyons enjoys more podium success at Silverstone

JAMIE Lyons would seem to have an affinity with Silverstone.

 

Late last month he claimed his maiden Honda British Talent Cup victory and a second place on the GP circuit at the famous venue and on Sunday of last week he was back on the podium after claiming a stunning second place in race two.

 

The 16-year-old didn’t give himself much hope of success ahead of the weekend, given the races were to be held on the National track, which suits the smaller and much lighter riders in the series.

 

However, he soon proved the doubters, including himself, very wrong indeed.

 

“I don’t know where that came from, it probably felt better than the win and a second last time!,” he beamed.

 

“The National track wasn’t supposed to suit me but I just tried my best and got there in the end.”

 

Having qualified a disappointing 13th, the Omagh lad produced a ride to remember in race one, clawing himself up to an excellent fifth placed finish in the end, having gained around nine places in the first lap!

 

He followed that up with an even more sensational performance, moving from seventh on the grid up to second where he finished, just 0.083 of a second behind winner Carter Brown and just 0.148 of a second and 0.157 of a second, respectively, ahead of third and fourth placed Johnny Garness and Casey O’Gorman.

 

And while delighted with the outcomes over the weekend, admits it took some time to appreciate what he had achieved because he didn’t actually realise he was on the last lap during race two.

 

“Me and Carter both actually looked at someone elses pitboards because there are that many on the pit wall, so you just look at what you can,” Jamie explained.

 

“We both must have looked at the same one because we both thought there were two laps left when we were on the last lap.

 

“We then noticed the digital chequered flag we both looked at each other as if to say ‘did we just get first and second, the two biggest riders in the class?!’

 

“We went around turn one looking at each other and asking ‘where you first?’ and ‘was I second?’, we just couldn’t get over it!”
