McCann stays the distance to claim victory

THE weekend’s Northern Ireland and Ulster 24 Hour Championships were made even harder than normal by the wet weather conditions in Belfast, not that that stopped Omagh’s Jill McCann who completed over 108 miles to claim the women’s title.

The well known local endurance athlete, who has excelled at several Last One Standing events this year and who is planning a fundraising 48 hour event next March only attended the weekend’s race at Victoria Park to ‘see friends’.

Attempting to stay injury free ahead of a big year next year, she had no intention on going for the NI an Ulster titles, but got caught in the moment and ended up finishing in the top 20 overall also.

“It was a shock to win, but it’s another achievement under the belt,” she beamed.

“I definitely wasn’t expecting it because I was just going to meet friends more or less, to start training for a big year ahead of me.

“I’ve the Four Nations, then my own 48 hours in March and I’m running for Ireland in October in the Satellite World Championships.

“The priority is to get some miles done and stay injury free but the weekend’s 111 miles wasn’t the plan, it just sort of happened!”
