Teague brothers ‘fit’ for a top five finish

BROTHERS Darren and Damon Teague finished fifth overall at the National Fitness Games, which took place at Lougbourough Unitersity. 

 

The competition is the ultimate test of strength, velocity, speed and endurance and the siblings made a big impression on their competitive debut against the fittest competitors in the UK and Ireland. 

 

Competitions like this have become big business in the UK and Darren and Damon relished the opportunity to take part and excel at one of the biggest of its kind at Loughborough.

 

The two Strathroy Harps footballers expected the ultimate fitness challenge ahead of the event and that’s exactly what they got. They were quietly confident that they could match the best over assault courses, in the weights room and in machine-based disciplines and although that belief initially wobbled a little, in the end it proved well founded following an exhausting weekend. 

 

“I’m buckled from head to toe!,” Darren exclaimed on Monday morning. 

 

“Each event got harder as it went along but we knew it was going to be tough and the workouts were absolutely brutal. 

 

“When we got to our hotel before the event, we saw these boys coming in and the size of them! We thought to ourselves ‘what are we doing here!’, they were beasts! And when we saw the events on paper we thought it wouldn’t be too bad, but it took me nearly an hour to recover from the first one!  

 

“But we did well, we held our own and I think our fitness meant we had a good balance overall. 

 

“We did very well. If we’d have got top 20 I’d have been over the moon because when we started off and we saw the level of competition, we hoped we wouldn’t let ourselves down but we came out of the first event second in our heat of 12, so we thought we might be OK. 

 

“We knew we weren’t going to be far away and we finished second overall in the final heat which levelled us out all right.”
