Talented Ashleigh scoops top award

ATHLETICS events may have been at a premium during 2020, but that didn’t stop Ashleigh McArdle from collecting an impressive 13 medals last season.

The 13-year-old Ballymagorry girl won an All-Ireland silver medal, eight golds and a silver in the Ulster Championships and two golds and a silver at the Donegal County Championships.

That superb form from the multi-eventer, who is ranked second in her age group in the UK, was acknowledged by the Ulster Athletics Council, who named the Holy Cross College pupil their athlete of the year in County Donegal in the girls’ 12-15 years category for 2020.

Ashleigh trains with Lifford Strabane Athletics Club, who have a host of talented younger competitiors coming through their ranks at present. And youth coach, Sharon Gallen believes that Ashleigh’s individual talent, particularly in the high jump, hurdles and shot putt, and the in-house competition amongst the younger multi-eventers has helped spur her on to such success.
