Twenty-five year wait ends for Trev

ONE thing is for certain, Trevor McGlynn is faster than the Ulster Athletic Council.

 

The Strabane man ran 14.50 seconds for the 110m hurdles in Tullamore to set a new UAC senior men’s record in the discipline on July 14th, 1996.

 

Unfortunately for Trev, that mark wasn’t officially ratified until last week when, after some correspondence with veteran Ulster Council secretary, Bernie O’Callaghan, his record was officially confirmed just a quarter of a century later!

 

“It’s taken a long time, 25 years, but thanks to one of the most dedicated men I know in athletics, Bernie O Callaghan, I’m delighted to finally get my Ulster record ratified,” beamed an understanding McGlynn, whose time would have been quick enough to qualify him for a major event had he run it on the right day.

 

“It’s just one of those things, you have people in voluntary roles and they are doing the best with the information they have and I’d like to thank Bernie for getting it sorted out for me.

 

“I was 18 at the time and it was a good time! I had run 14.64 about two or three weeks previous and the qualifying for the World Championships that year was 14.62.

 

“Then I ran that 14.50 but that was four days after the qualifying date had closed, which meant I missed the World Championships by just four days and unfortunately I didn’t get to go!”
