Omagh live to fight another day

OMAGH Accies live to fight another day after they sealed the relegation/promotion play-off place in Energia All-Ireland League 2C after the final fixtures of the regular season on Saturday.

At one stage, Glenn Kyle’s men were bottom and facing the drop when Tullamore engineered a surprise lead at Ballyclare, but the County Antrim men stormed back to seal the win and Omagh battled back too, coming from 14-0 down to take a 21-26 lead before Clonmel snatched victory at the death. In the end, though, Omagh didn’t need the two points they earned on the day but they know they will need to be better defensively than they have been all season if they are to retain their senior status for another season when they entertain either Bective Rangers or Tullamore in the play-off decider at the Thomas Mellon Playing Fields on Saturday, April 26.

Clonmel looked as though they were going to put the Accies to the sword swiftly on Saturday when they raced into a 14-0 lead but the visitors responded in style, as they have done over the last few weeks of the season, with David Braden and Kiwi, Connor Watherston-Spencer dotting down to level matters.

Clonmel responded, however, edging seven points in front before a Matthew Eccles try, converted by Elliott, who brought up his kicking hat-trick with the extras, again drew Omagh level and the visitors were then in dream land when player-coach, Neville Magee crossed the whitewash to give them a 21-26 advantage.

Unfortunately for the Accies, Clonmel then went straight down the other end of the pitch to grab a converted try for the win.

“It was disappointing to concede that try after we got the bonus point at the end but we were a wee bit inconsistent in defence and our discipline let us down to let them back into it at the end, but we did what we needed to do type of thing and we live to fight another day,” observed Accies skipper Matthew Clyde, who is already planning for April 26th.

“[The play-off] is what it is, we just have to work hard in training over the next three weeks for whoever it is coming up to Omagh and take it from there. We just have to get ready and hope we have a big support down.”
