AMBITIOUS plans have been announced to invest £25 million in building 170 housing units on the landmark site of the former Tyrone County Hospital in Omagh.
Covering almost 20 acres, the grounds have been lying empty since the ‘County’ closed in June 2017, with services moving to the new Omagh Hospital and Primary Care Complex.
But Co Derry-based developer, South Bank Square Ltd, which bought the site last October, has now revealed its plans to build a wide range of homes, including apartments, townhouses, semi-detached and detached houses.
In an acknowledgement to the history of the former Tyrone County Hospital, the developer has outlined plans to provide a portion of the new homes in the scheme for NHS staff at a reduced price.
West Tyrone Sinn Féin MP, Órfhlaith Begley, described the news as a “massive opportunity” for Omagh.
“Now, the chance is there for the public to have their say on the site and what they want to see included, and I would encourage people to take that opportunity,” she added.
