OMAGH CBS have released a statement praising their Oisin McGrath final opponents St Patrick’s Maghera for their “sportsmanship and integrity” following a successful resolution of Wednesday night’s showdown in Kildress, which ended in controversy over a scorekeeping error.
Referee Colm McDonald declared the game a draw, and a replay was provisionally scheduled for Monday night, but there was considerable confusion as many onlookers, including reporters in attendance, considered that Omagh CBS had won on a scoreline of 3-10 to 3-8.
It was unclear what would happen next, but a resolution was found when St Patrick’s Maghera released a statement yesterday evening acknowledging that a mistake had been made, and congratulating Omagh CBS on their Oisin McGrath success, drawing a line under the matter.
Omagh CBS have responded with a statement of their own, praising their opponents for their sportsmanship in acknowledging the outcome of the game.
“Congratulations to our McGrath Cup team on winning the prestigious Oisin McGrath Trophy on Wednesday evening!
Commiserations to St Patrick’s College, Maghera who, as well as showing class and ability on the pitch, also demonstrated true sportsmanship and integrity in liaising with both ourselves and Ulster Schools GAA yesterday to clear up the discrepancy in relation to the outcome of the game.
“Our thanks also to the Kildress club for hosting the final, as well as all stewards and officials for overseeing what was an excellent and exciting game of football.”
