Speed of vehicles being measured outside Newtownstewart school

DRIVING speeds are being measured outside a Newtownstewart school this week to see if more enforcement action is needed.

A temporary Speed Indicator Device (SID) has been installed outside Newtownstewart Model Primary School at Baronscourt Road.

This follows concerns about the speed of some vehicles on the road.

The SID has been installed by the Derry and Strabane Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP).

“These devices aim to encourage drivers to adhere to the speed limit and if a speeding hotspot is identified, we will ask police to follow this up with enforcement,” said a PCSP spokesperson.

“If you have concerns about speeding in a particular location, please contact Derry & Strabane PCSP and we will get a SID placed there as soon as possible.”

In June, Infrastructure Minister, Liz Kimmins announced the next phase of part-time 20mph speed limit schemes for schools across the North.

Part-time 20mph zones have now been installed at around 270 schools.

Among the Tyrone schools to have new speed limits introduced outside their premises as part of the latest phase of the scheme were St Mary’s Primary School in Ballymagorry, Carntall Primary School in Clogher, Sacred Heart Primary School in Tattyreagh and Castlederh High School.
