Celebrations provide fitting farewell to Drumlish Primary School

PAST pupils of a small rural primary school outside Dromore gathered at the weekend to celebrate its rich history.

Drumlish Primary School, which had a falling enrolment for a number of years, will officially close its doors for the last time on Tuesday, October 31.

First opened in 1956, it was an integral part of the surrounding community throughout the past 67 years.

Ahead of its impending closure, local people, teachers and current and past pupils acknowledged the contribution of Drumlish PS to education in the area at a special celebration on Saturday.

In addition, the event at the school provided an opportunity for everyone in attendance to have a chance to look at old photographs, tell stories about their time at Drumlish and, of course, to catch up with old friends.

Earlier this month, Mark Browne, Permanent Secretary at the Department of Education, decided that Drumlish Primary School would officially cease operating on October 31.

The Council for Catholic Maintained Schools praised the contribution of the Board of Governors and staff of Drumlish Primary School for their commitment and contribution to education in the local area.

Refreshments were also provided at the event, which ensured a very fitting finale to the life of a school which will be fondly remembered by so many.
