Local couple take on marathon challenge for cancer charity

AN Omagh woman and her Seskinore fiancé will be lacing up their walking boots next month to take on the Mourne Way Marathon Walk in aid of Cancer Focus Northern Ireland.

Alison Donnell and Ivor Russell will be joining hundreds of participants on Saturday, June 7, for the 26.2-mile trek across one of Northern Ireland’s most scenic routes.

The walk promises breathtaking views and a mix of challenging terrain, from forest trails and river paths to steep mountain slopes.

Fitness enthusiasts Alison and Ivor are no strangers to endurance events – Alison is a well-known member of Strule Valley Riding Club, while Ivor is part of Knockmany Running Club. But despite their active lifestyles, both are taking training seriously.

“We’ve done similar walks before, and Ivor is a runner, but we’re still putting in the miles to get ready,” Alison told the Ulster Herald.

“Twenty-six miles is no small feat, and the terrain can be tricky, but we’re really looking forward to it.”

For Alison, this challenge is about more than just personal achievement.

Having previously completed fundraising hikes up Mount Snowdon and Ben Nevis, as well as the Giant’s Causeway Mighty Hike, she says supporting cancer charities is something that’s deeply meaningful to her.

“Cancer charities are very close to my heart,” she said.

“Everyone I know has been affected by cancer at some point. I’m always amazed by the incredible work these organisations do in our communities.”

The couple will be raising funds for Cancer Focus Northern Ireland, a local charity that provides vital care and support services for cancer patients and their families.

The organisation also runs prevention programmes, funds research, and campaigns for better health policies—all largely funded by donations and public fundraising.

Supporters can contribute to Alison and Ivor’s campaign via their JustGiving page: www.justgiving.com/page/alison-donnell-5.

“Any donation is very much appreciated,” they added.
