Local kids create art-tastic props for St Patrick’s Parade

SCHOOLCHILDREN across Strabane have been getting out their scissors and green ribbons this week to make props for the spectacular St Patrick’s Day parade which will take centre stage in the town centre next Thursday, March 17.

It will be the first St Patrick’s parade in Strabane since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and to make it bigger and bigger than ever before Derry City and Strabane District Council have called on the help of 130 children from three local schools to put their artistic skills to the test with lots of Spring props and costumes for the occasion. They are joining sports clubs, dance, and community groups within the district who are working hard building floats and making costumes to make the day a success.

The school workshops were delivered in St Catherine’s Primary School, Holy Cross College and Gaelscoil Uí Dhochartaigh by Streetwise Community Circus who provided their expert guidance as the young people worked on various items for the parade which takes place from 2pm on St Patrick’s Day.

Mayor Graham Warke, paid a visit to St Catherine’s PS this week to lend a helping hand to some of the hard-working boys and girls putting their props together.

“It was great to join some of the young people in St Catherine’s Primary School to see the amazing props they have been putting together for the Strabane parade. With the help of Streetwise, the pupils made some bright and festive pieces that will definitely get everyone into the St Patrick’s Day spirit come next Thursday,” said Mayor Warke.

“It really encompasses the community spirit that we want to capture with the parade – which puts local people and organisations at its heart.

“Without these groups the parade wouldn’t be possible, and I’m delighted that so many boys and girls from the town will have a key role in delivering a very special parade return.

“Well done to everyone and I can’t want to see all the floats and costumes on display in the town next week. It’s going to be amazing.”
