FUN, fundraising and sparkles were on the menu for Loreto Grammar students recently, when they held a glamorous gala dinner at the Silverbirch Hotel in aid of an African school building project.
Indeed, this October, a dozen Year 12 students have been selected to travel to Lusaka in conjunction with the ‘Spirit of Paul McGirr Foundation’, and these students have pledged to raise £15K for phase one construction and development of a Home Economics classroom and food store, at a school in Zambia called ‘Tyrone Secondary School’, established by the Foundation.
It is hoped that the Home Economics classroom will help to provide one hot meal a day for up to 800 pupils in attendance in St Teresa’s Parish, which is on the verge of a large slum area in the region of Lusaka, Zambia.
Each student will pay their own fare so that all proceeds which were raised on the night will go directly to the people of Lusaka.
As part of their fundraising efforts, the students held the gala ball, which featured Malachi Cush as MC, a drinks reception, followed by a delicious three-course meal. A raffle was further held, and prizes, with donated by very generous sponsors, were also awarded on the night, which closed with a DJ and lots of dancing!
