Dungannon band’s new single is an essential listen for Indie fans

The Capris are a Dungannon-based indie rock band consisting of Odhran Donnelly on vocals, Padraic Loughran on guitar, Jonny Mitchell on bass and Delaney O’Neill on drums.

Their latest single, ‘No Valve’, was released on March 1 on all major streaming platforms, and it is an essential listen for anyone who is a fan of indie and alternative rock.

With a solid drum beat as the backbone of the track, accompanied by infectious bass grooves and nostalgic guitar sounds, lead singer Odhran’s voice truly is the icing on the cake that compliments this banger of a tune, that echoes the nostalgia of rock music over the last 20 years.

Citing their influences as Kings of Leon, Inhaler and Sam Fender, the band formed in 2018 as an acoustic three piece as Odhran, Jonny and Padraic were preparing to leave school.

Speaking with the Tyrone Herald this week, frontman Odhran explained their origins.

“Having just finished school, we all went on a holiday to Croatia together to attend the Ultra Europe EDM festival,” he said.

“It was a bit of a drunken decision while camping in the Croatian mountains to start a band, so as soon as we got home, we started practising and coming up with names.”

The original three members started playing cover sets around local bars, performing in the likes of Hagan’s in Dungannon, Tomney’s in Moy, Daly’s in Aughnacloy and Granny Annie’s in Enniskillen.

It wasn’t long until the lads caught the writing bug and started producing their own material.

“Padraic is the lyricist in the band,” explained Odhran.

“We released our first two singles, ‘I Got Love’ and ‘My Best Nights’ as a three-piece before Delaney joined us on drums.”

With Delaney now cementing the band’s line-up, offering a back bone to their sound, the Dungannon lads went onto release two further singles, ‘Come See Me’ and ‘Melancholy Blues’.

With a wealth of original material now under their belt, Odhran explained that they now ‘do a bit of both’ regarding cover gigs in bars and gigs where they showcase their own tunes.

“We still do the odd cover gig in bars,” said Odhran. “But we are certainly more focussed these days on writing our own music, recording it and getting out there to play it.

“Recently, we supported Lucy Bell at her EP launch in the Student’s Union in Belfast – that was a great night.

“We also played Camp Dalfest in Glenarm last year, another great experience.”

With their fifth single, ‘No Valve’, now riding the airwaves, Odhran said that, lyrically, the song is ‘very telling’.

“It’s about growing up at home and the struggles you face in everyday life,” he explained.

With plans to record more original material and keep busy gigging, Odhran concluded, “Watch this space!”

The Capris latest single ‘No Valve’ is available now on all major streaming services alongside their previous four singles, ‘I Got Love’, ‘My Best Nights’, ‘Come See Me’, and ‘Melancholy Blues’.
