OMAGH’S Aoife McArdle will be among 12 distinguished individuals to receive an Honorary Doctorate from Ulster University this summer.
A director, writer and cinematographer, Aoife is best known for her work across film, television drama, music videos and commercials.
Her accolades include the IFTA Rising Star Award, a Women in Film and Television (WFTV) Best Director Award, and nominations from the Directors Guild of America and the Primetime Emmys.
Originally born in Dartford outside London, Aoife’s parents moved the family to Omagh when she was six-years-old.
Her career began in 2005 with the music video for Bloc Party’s hit ‘Helicopter’ and has since included work for Coldplay, U2, James Vincent McMorrow, Bryan Ferry, and Belfast-based electronic duo Bicep. In 2017, she released her debut feature film ‘Kissing Candice’. More recently, she co-directed the acclaimed Apple TV+ series ‘Severance’ alongside Hollywood star Ben Stiller.
“It’s fantastic to be recognised by Ulster University, especially at such an exciting time for film production in Belfast,” said Aoife.
“I look forward to visiting this summer and meeting some of the filmmakers of the future.”
Others receiving honorary doctorates include Netflix VFX executive Laura Livingstone, Belfast-born kickboxing champion and businessman Billy Murray, and Hilary McGrady, Director General of the National Trust.
Ulster University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Bartholomew, congratulated the recipients.
“It is a privilege to award these Honorary Doctorates to individuals who embody excellence, creativity, and integrity. Their achievements are a powerful inspiration for our university community.”
The degrees will be conferred during graduation ceremonies taking place between June 30 and July 10 across Belfast, Coleraine and Derry.
