£2,000 scholarship scheme for Irish language students

YOUNG Irish speakers from the Omagh area can once again apply for a £2,000 annual scholarship funded by the local Seaweed Trust.

Fonduireacht na Feamainne (The Seaweed Trust) was established in 2017 to provide an annual scholarship and so far has delivered funding of £12,000 to assist four recipients in their pursuit of third level Irish language education.

It also encourages speakers to become involved with localprojects promoting the Irish language.

The scheme is now in its fourth year and Brian MacCionnaith, chair of Coiste Phobal ar a’n Iul and sponsor, has congratulated the recipients for their “energy and passion” to further the development of the Irish language in Omagh.

“With the current development of Gaelscoil na gCrann, as well as the growth of Irish medium youth work, it is clear that the number of people who are trained for employment through the medium of Irish is growing substantially in this area,” Mr MacCionnaith said.

“This scholarship is just one of the many ways that Phobal ar a’n Iul supports the Irish language.”

Phobal ar a’n Iul was set up in 2014 and since then has provided classes, concerts, youth clubs, trips to the Gaeltacht, summer schemes, a walking group, advocacy on language issues and a range of other services.

Development officer Ciarán Mag Uidhir has thanked Brian MacCionnaith for his involvement and sponsorship of the scholarship.

“One of the main aims of Phobal ar a’n Iul is to foster a new generation of language activists and the Fondúireacht na Feamainne scholarship represents an amazing opportunity for a passionate young Irish speaker to receive support to continue their study at third level.

More details about the Fondúireacht na Feamainne scholarship will be released via www.pobalaraniul.com, Pobal ar a’n Iúl’s social media, local press, or by contacting Oifigeach@pobalaraniul.com

Fondúireacht na Feamainne will be available for students to apply for the 2020/2021 academic year in September 2020.
