As we continue to move ever-closer to normality, we’re now only one short week away until restaurants, bars and cafes can reopen their doors. The live events industry however is still some way off a return it would seem, at least to the way we once knew it.
Thankfully there’s no shortage of musicians and comedians putting on live shows and creating content for our enjoyment at home. I’ve picked out some of the best local and international streams that are happening across the week for hiwhatson.com, check out my recommendations below and have a safe and enjoyable weekend in.
Thursday 25th June
• Colm and Caitriona Kirwan return at the new time of 7.15pm with more songs and stories from the country music duo out of Nashville.
• The ‘Save The Grand’ fundraiser featuring the likes of Frank Turner, Beans on Toast, Billy Bragg, Alfie from The Holloway’s and loads more performing live from The Clapham Grand Stage raising money to help save the independent venue. The event can be streamed on Facebook Live from 7.30pm.
Friday 26th June
• Gerry Norman is back with his penultimate Friday night stream. The ‘A Plastic Rose’ and ‘Tour Alaska’ front man will be performing originals from both projects with some cover requests thrown in from 7.30pm on his ‘Tour Alaska’ Facebook page.
• Omagh’s Jonny Kirwan from Glasgow based band, False Friends will be performing live from 7.30pm in conjunction with ‘Live Music Scotland.’ A whole host of other top Scottish acts will be performing throughout the evening as well, Check out ‘Live Music Scotland’ on Facebook for full listings.
• The Hootin’ Annies return on Friday night at 8pm with a takeover stream on the ‘Glasgow Irish Bands and Gigs’ page. The trio will be performing songs from some of their favourite artists in their unique folk-rock style, complimented by captivating ballads.
• Justin McGurk will be back this weekend with his regular live shows streaming from home at 8pm on Friday and Sunday, playing all of your favourite party classics and requests.
• The Tallest Man On Earth’s Friday night YouTube Live stream’s continue from 8pm. With hundreds of millions of streams on Spotify alone, the Swedish singer-songwriter has a unique voice accompanying his guitar and banjo and is well worth checking out.
• Bantam and Fowl’s Cara and Niall return with some more easy listening classics from the likes of Neil Young, Van Morrison and The Beatles to name just a few from 9pm on Facebook Live.
• Sean Magee is back from 9pm on Friday, performing from different locations the past two weeks the shows are getting bigger and better every week. Last Friday we were treated to guest appearances from Sean’s Father and brother from The Magee Family band and sister EliRose Magee as well as dancing from girlfriend Aine. Expect another high energy show from the extremely talented Fermanagh man and his family.
Saturday 27th June
• Katherine Jenkins is performing a special ‘Best of Lockdown’ session comprising of songs from the shows and requests she’s had during her previous live streams. You can see her performance from 6pm on her official Facebook page.
• Gavin Kelly is back with his Saturday night acoustic session from 7.30pm playing covers and originals from home.
• Brian Pritchard and Sons will be entertaining from 8pm taking all your requests and dedications covering country and pop classics.
• Kiel and Logan from The Logues will be taking requests, playing their own originals and all of your favourite covers from 8pm as usual.
• Kevin Hurson’s weekend sessions are back at 8pm on Saturday night from his acoustic requests show and 2pm on Sunday afternoon for his folk and trad show.
• The Stand Comedy Club will be streaming live from their iconic stage in Edinburgh for the first time in months, of course there’ll be no audience in attendance but you can expect sets from some of the very best acts on the comedy circuit including Phil Jupitus, Chris Forbes, Jojo Sutherland and Dalys Comedy Club favourites Mark Nelson, Ray Bradshaw and Liam Withnail from 8.30pm.
• Davy Kerrigan’s acoustic and electric classics show returns at the new time of 8.30pm playing all of your classic rock and blues favourites.
• Rory Gallagher from ‘The Revs’ and ‘Rory and The Island’ brings his Saturday Night House Party sessions to Facebook live from 9.30pm playing originals and covers and sharing stories from his days on tour.
• DJ2Js brings the club to our homes from 10pm with a late night session of dance and trance classics.
Also, across the weekend on what would have been the 50th anniversary of the Glastonbury Festival, the BBC will be showing classic sets from over the years at Worthy Farm on a dedicated BBC iPlayer channel. With the show starting at 10am each day right through to midnight And beyond from Thurs-Mon, there’ll be performances from some of the biggest names in global music past and present, including David Bowie, Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Foo Fighters, Oasis, Radiohead, Ed Sheeran and loads more across the five days.
On Sunday, the regular live stream from Country music superstar Cliona Hagan will return at 7pm followed by Johnny Gallagher of The Boxtie Band at 8pm as well as blues and rock covers from Owen McNulty at the same regular time.
Barry Kirwan will be performing country covers and originals at 8pm on Monday and Conor Magee from the Magee Family Band will be streaming live from 9pm. Dominic Kirwan returns at 8.15pm with his weekly session on Wednesday and there’s loads more besides.
