Advice for Omagh HSBC customers

THE Consumer Council is urging HSBC customers to review their banking needs ahead of the upcoming closure of the Omagh branch later this year.

They have advised customers that they can still withdraw and deposit money from the Post Office.

Scott Kennerley, Director of Financial Services at the Consumer Council, said, “This announcement will be disappointing news for HSBC customers in Omagh. Whilst the ability to access banking services through the internet, apps and over the phone is important, there are still many people who rely on face-to-face banking through their local branch.

“This is another blow for consumers who rely on face-to-face banking, following the news that Danske Bank closed four branches in October 2021, and AIB closed 15 branches in November 2021.

“Consumers can continue to visit their nearest Post Office to pay in cash and cheques, withdraw money, and check their balance. Basic banking services is something the Post Office provides for all banks in Northern Ireland.

“Before the HSBC branches in Omagh closes, we would advise customers to think about their needs and preferences, and then liaise with their local branch to discuss the options that are available. If the bank if unable to meet these needs, you may wish to look at switching provider.”

The Omagh HSBC branch is due to close on August 16.

Sinn Féin has described the announced closure of the HSBC Omagh branch as not only devastating news for the staff affected but also a blow to the commercial life of the town and are seeking an urgent meeting with the bank.

Local MLA Nicola Brogan said, “The news that the local branch located at the Market Street in Omagh is to close is devastating for the staff affected and their families but also represents a blow to the commercial life of the town.

“The bank states that it will endeavour to find alternative roles for staff but the closest branch will be 33 miles away in Portadown where the administration of local customer accounts is being transferred to.

“While first direct personal current account customers will still be able to access their bank account at local Post Office branches and provide alternative arrangements for business customers, this is of little consolation to those loyal customers who will now have to travel to access a branch bank as well as representing the loss of a key service upon which many small businesses rely.

“Also of concern is that once HSBC vacate the building the ATM service will go with it which will further reduce peoples’ ability to access cash in the Omagh area.“

The West Tyrone MP Órfhlaith Begley, has written to HSBC on behalf of the party locally requesting an urgent meeting to press the range of concerns that we have in relation to the closure.
