THE ‘Big Beragh Litter Pick’ which involved scores of local people in townlands across the parish during the past ten days has resulted in the collection of over one and a half tonnes of rubbish.
It was the latest in a series of similar initiatives which have been taking place in rural areas throughout mid-Tyrone.
Young and old alike went around the roads and lay-bys close to their homes collecting items which had been discarded.
Niall Farley, who helped co-ordinate Beragh’s Big Litter Lift, thanked all those who had made the effort to come out.
“This is a really worthwhile project which a lot of areas have now taken on and we’re delighted to have played our part.
“The sense of community, enjoyment and exercise that people got while participating in the litter pick was amazing, and the fact that the weather was absolutely brilliant was also a big help,” he said.
“The challenge was a huge success in collecting 1,560kg of rubbish, which is over one and a half tonnes. The absence of that amount of material along our roads will benefit not just our local ecosystem, but has also undoubtedly contributed to making permanent and positive steps towards a greener earth.
“With the lockdown now in place for about eight weeks, this was a good way of bringing people together again at a safe social distance within their own areas and townlands.
“We are also encouraging people to continue lifting litter wherever they see it in the weeks ahead and we’d just also like to thank Fermanagh and Omagh District Council for their co-operation in arranging for the collection of the waste for disposal.”
