A CALL for action to be taken to find a long term solution to recycling facilities for the wider Castlederg area has been made by SDLP councillor, Steven Edwards.
Speaking following this month’s Environment and Regeneration Committee at Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Edwards said, “I raised the issue of recycling and waste management at the committee as there is a massive gap in the wider Castlederg area. The lack of suitable facilities has only been exacerbated during Covid where Castlederg remains disadvantaged as the only large town who have not had their facilities reopened.
“I understandcouncil officials have met with the PSNI at the current Killen site and deemed it not suitable due to its small size and the inability to properly manage traffic. A temporary measure has been put in place in Spamount but this is only for a few hours per week and is not sufficient. Newtownstewart is the closest operational facilities but people shouldn’t have to travel that distance when these facilities can be provided locally.
“The residents of the wider Castlederg area pay high rates like everywhere else yet are being hard done by. I’ve called on council officials to immediately look into a long term facility for the area and look at the possibility of massively upgrading the Killen site to make it fit for purpose.
“This issue has gone on far too long and has not been dealt with by council since amalgamation and must be put firmly back on the table.”
