POLISH people living in Omagh had the chance to vote in the European elections at Community House over the weekend.
Voting took place on Sunday between 7am and 9pm at the temporary election hub in Omagh Community House. The votes were counted immediately afterwards, with the results then sent to officials in the Polish capital, Warsaw.
In the North, just over 800 people signed up to vote which is almost double the number who registered for the last European elections in 2019.
A total of 92 people were registered to vote in Omagh, with 82 turning out.
Local ethnic support worker, Karolina Wenta, said that they were hopeful Omagh would have a polling station for next year’s Polish presidential elections.
Karolina said, “There was a small turnout this year for the Polish EU elections overall and this was reflected in the Omagh number, which was not as big as previous years.
“We are still very happy we have a place to vote in the town.”
Poland elects 53 members of the European Parliament (MEPs).
The country’s largest parties, the Civic Coalition and the Law and Justice, received very similar support in this election.
The Civic Coalition received 21 seats, one more than Law and Justice.
The voting was overseen by the Polish Consulate in Belfast which was opened in 2018.
