Community’s emotional farewell to Canon Marron

HUNDREDS of people lined the footpath up to St Lawrence’s Church in Fintona to express their thanks to Canon Patrick Marron as he left the parish after 32 years.

A special book of messages from parishioners was also presented to Canon Marron following a Mass celebrating his work and ministry in the area.

In his homily, Canon Marron said he had always tried to do his best for the pastoral and material development of the area.

“I am grateful to you, the people, for all your efforts, goodness, kindness, help and support over the years and I could never forget your kindness,” he said.

“I did no more than I was expected to do. Over the past few days, your words of appreciation have been overwhelming, and to cry along with you, young and old.

“I was sent here to attend to the spiritual needs of the people of Donacavey and tried in my own way to make it a better place for people to worship, live and to die.”

On behalf of the people of the parish, the Pastoral Council for the parish said it was with mixed emotions that they gathered to say goodbye to Canon Marron – joy at celebrating a remarkable dedication and longevity of a true disciple of Christ and sadness as the curtain falls on a career of service by a great man.

They said, “You have been a beacon of light to our parish over the past 32 years and always willing to provide support and guidance to the people both at a pastoral and sacramental level. You will be viewed as one of the greatest priests ever to serve the people of Donacavey.

“You led us with a steely determination into the new millennium and oversaw the continuous development of our parish – all your work will remain as a testament to your time here.”

Canon Marron was also presented with a Crystal Rose plate as a token of appreciation for the support as their Honorary President has given Fintona Pearses GAA club over the years. A club spokesman said, “It was a very sad farewell to Rev Canon Marron.

“We are honoured to run an U14 tournament each year, ‘The Marron Cup’ which attracts the best teams throughout Tyrone and Ulster.

“We will endeavour to continue with this and Canon Marron will always be welcome back to make the presentation of the cup.”

Canon Marron has returned to his native Carrickmacross in Co Monaghan.
