INSTEAD of sipping champagne and toasting their wedding day, a local couple will be swapping the aisle for a treadmill and running their hearts out for two fantastic causes.
Amy Edgar, who is a nurse from Omagh, joked that guzzling down the Powerade wasn’t quite the wedding that herself and Adam Lecky, a native of Castlederg, originally planned – but it will certainly be a day that they won’t forget in a hurry!
Determined to make the most of what would have been their wedding day, the pair have challenged themselves to complete a 60K run between themselves over a period of just 12 hours in aid of Aware: Defeat Depression and Marie Curie.
Exchanging her romantic veil for a sporty sweat band, and her glamorous high heels for trusty trainers, Amy, who works as a staff nurse in Belfast, says the Tyrone pair ready for the challenge… Sort of!
“We may have bitten off more than we can chew!” she laughed. “We knew we wanted to do something to celebrate the day, so we came up with the idea to raise some funds for two very worthwhile causes.”
The tough challenge will see both Amy and Adam run 5K every other hour until they have clocked up a grand total of 60K – and happily the 29-year-old is staying positive.
“There is no better way to be celebrating our pre-Covid wedding day,” she said. “Of course this year has been an awful year for people, especially those who have booked their weddings, but at the same time staying healthy and not putting others at risk matters so much more.
Amy explained that, prior to the Covid-19 outbreak, she worked in the cardiology department of the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.
But now, she is on the frontlines of the Covid-19 wards in Belfast’s Mater Hospital, saving the lives of the worst affected by the virus.
It is something which she is passionate about doing, and she receives great support from her family, who also have a rich medical background.
Her mum, Sandra, works in cardiac assessment, her father, Davy works in the mental health field, and her sister, Katy is a radiographer.
“I am definitely out of my comfort zone at the minute,” Amy said. “But at the same time, I am able to help those most in need which I am proud of.”
