Drumragh set for ‘The Great Solo Re-Run’

MEMBERS of Drumragh Sarsfields have set themselves a lockdown challenge – ‘The Great Solo Re-Run’.

 

Back in August 2011, The Great Solo Run saw 150 members of the Sarsfields solo a size 5 football, in relay, 115 miles from their home ground in Clanabogan all the way to Croke Park.

 

Today, Saturday, May 16, Drumragh members are attempting to recreate – from the safety of their own homes and gardens – the 36,000 solos the original journey took, all in aid of charity.

 

“All members of the club are going to be getting involved,” Paddy Roche, one of the organisers, said.

 

“Youth members are encouraged to do 100 solos, and adult members are encouraged to do 500 solos, Gaelic For Mothers And Others are encouraged to do as many as they can as all other participants. 

 

“All efforts will be videoed, and the number of solos verified by referees Fabian McGlone and Damien Mullin.

 

“The aim is to virtually unite everyone and bring the club together, all in an effort to raise funds for a very worthy cause.”

All money raised will go to Trocaire, a charity that is fighting the Covid-19 pandemic in the poorest areas of the world. 

 

“We chose Trocaire as they are renowned for their excellent work in the developing world,” said Paddy. “We are fortunate to have access to running water and medical supplies, we are aware that others don’t. 

 

“We hope that this fundraiser can help those less fortunate than ourselves in the developing world during this international crisis.”
