THE funeral of the late Art McRory will take place tomorrow (Friday) in St. Patrick’s Church, Dungannon at 1pm.
Tributes have flowed in since the sad news emerged yesterday that Mr McRory, an icon of Tyrone GAA, had passed away at the age of 82. His wake is ongoing but his family have requested that the house is strictly private after 10pm and on the morning of the funeral.
Mr McRory’s involvement with Tyrone GAA stretched all the way back to 1958 when he debuted on the county minor team but he is most well known for his various stints in charge of the senior intercounty team.
The Dungannon Clarkes man steered Tyrone to five Ulster titles and two All-Ireland final appearances in 1986 and 1995, helping to pave the way to an unprecedented streak of success in the ‘noughties’.
Tyrone legend Peter Canavan played under Art McRory and said that the news of his death was ‘devastating’: “All the successes we had in the ‘noughties’ can be traced back to Art McRory. For anyone who knew and played under Art, the news of his passing is devastating. He was an inspiration to so many, a confidant and so supportive.”
