Funeral of Tyrone All-Ireland winning coach takes place

THE funeral has taken place of the All-Ireland winning Tyrone coach, Fergal McCann.

People lined the route of the cortege as it made its way from the family home to St Macartan’s Church outside Augher.

Mr McCann (47) died on Monday evening following a long illness.

The cortege stopped briefly outside Fr Hackett Park, the local GAA grounds, where a number of players and members stood in silent tribute.

Fr Peter McAnenly, who was the chief celebrant at the Requiem Mass, told mourners that Mr McCann was highly respected in the local community.

“Many will remember Fergal as a kind and caring young man, and as someone who made a real difference in this world and a difference for the better,” he said.

Tony Donnelly, who was also part of the Tyrone backroom team for the All-Ireland wins of 2005 and 2008, gave a brief summary of a range of items brought to the altar at the start of the Mass, reflecting the sporting and personal life of Mr McCann.

See tomorrow’s Ulster Herald and Dungannon Herald for further tributes.
