Minimising impact of Covid-19 on Termon community

A VOLUNTARY response team has been set up to ensure that coronavirus has a minimal impact on the community in the Tyrone parish of Termonmaguirc, which covers Carrickmore, Loughmacrory and Creggan.

More than 100 volunteers have signed up to be part of the Termon Covid-19 Response Team, which is operating a dedicated helpline – 07581 531854 – for anyone who needs assistance in these unprecedented circumstances.

The volunteers include call handlers, tradespeople and general helpers – and more are coming forward each day.

Group member, Rory O’Brien, said, “If anyone has any issue at all, be it an emergency repair to a collection of groceries or prescriptions, then call the helpline.

“No mater what, we will try our best to help with even the most trivial things.”

Last week, the group held a live online broadcast from the Church of St Colmcille in Carrickmore, featuring local doctors and clergy, to reinforce the ‘stay at home’ message.

The online audience was told that Termon Covid-19 Response Team had been set up to ensure that irrespective of the rural location and remoteness to major hospitals, the local community would “receive the best possible care and attention in its hour of need”.

As part of its efforts, the group has erected hand sanitiser stations at ‘key locations’ in Carrickmore, Loughmacrory and Creggan, including outside different shops, the post office and the chemist.

Volunteers have also been distributing the hand sanitisers to carers and the elderly in the community.

An extensive leaflet drop has also been carried out of all the homes in the parish, to make local residents aware of the service being provided. The flyer included a list of useful contact numbers.

The response team has also been fortunate to receive a donation of much-needed Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).
Mr O’Brien added, “We are circulating this locally for the ones with the greatest need.”

• The Termon Covid-19 Response Team’s dedicated helpline is 07581 531854. It is open every day from 8am to 10pm.
