‘Open your heart to an older pet this Valentine’s Day’

WITH Valentine’s Day a rose’s throw away, a kind Omagh woman believes that now is the time to open up your heart and home to an older pet.

Janice Porter, chairperson of Grovehill Animal Trust, recently adopted an adorable eight-year-old miniature schnauzer named Lilli, and was keen to point out that there is ‘something special’ about giving an older animal a second chance at life.

The animal lover also added that owning a senior pet can reduce stress levels, provide motivation and encouragement to exercise – and another plus is that they are most-likely toilet-trained!

“When people think about adding a pet to their family, they often think of a kitten or pup but it is worthwhile considering adopting an older pet,” Janice described. “Take a dog for instance: If you adopt an older dog, you immediately know their full-grown size, and their temperament.

“If you choose to re-home from a shelter they will be able to tell you about the dog’s personality and quirks.

“Sadly, there is a perception that dogs are handed into shelters because of behavioural issues. Occasionally, that is the case. But more often than not, it is due to changes within the family, or critical illness of the owner.”

Lilli, Janice’s new senior pet, was left into Grovehill when her owners were no longer able to look after her.

“As with any pet it took her a few weeks to completely settle into life with me and three other dogs,” Janice said.

“She was toilet-trained, has great recall and is used to walking on a lead.

“Over the years I’ve fostered and adopted dogs of all ages, but for me there’s something special about giving an older cat or dog a second chance. So, as we celebrate St Valentine’s Day, let’s recognise the value our pets add to our lives and in return may we care for them and meet their every need.”
