Order of Malta delivering medication during Covid-19

THE Order of Malta Omagh Unit has played in integral part in helping the community during the Covid-19 crisis.

The Unit has been assisting the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service with providing a vital medication delivery service to those living in rural areas from two local pharmacies including Bradley’s in Dromore.

The Order of Malta usually operates by keeping people safe at large events such as Ulster Championship matches or rallies.

However, due to the Covid-19 crisis, the volunteers have been carrying out deliveries to ensure those who are vulnerable and disadvantaged are receiving their medication.

Angela McGoldrick, officer in Charge of the Order of Malta, signed up to work with two pharmacies in the Omagh area and told the Ulster Herald, “The Order of Malta in Omagh is delighted to assist with this project and our 14 volunteers have found it very rewarding to be able to help during these times we are faced with.

“Our youth members are also involved in the scheme and have said how humbling it is to be involved.

“Many of the clients are self isolating and are delighted to see us and talk for a few minutes while we safely deliver their medication,” said Ms McGoldrick.

The Order of Malta Omagh Unit has both a cadet and senior unit and has been operating for 55 years in the town.

The senior unit provides first aid cover to many local events within the local and regional community, while the Unit teaches first aid to the cadets who also compete in several competitions.

Along with the medication delivery service, the unit has also been cleaning and sanitising the Sacred Heart Church in Omagh which has recently reopened for private prayer.

The cadet unit have sent kind hearted letters to those in care homes who can no longer receive visitors and have recorded a video, along with units all over Ireland, to show appreciation to healthcare workers and the NHS.

Cadet units, where young people aged between ten to 16-years-old, are also trained in basic lifesaving skills.
