THE Drumquin community could soon benefit from a new environmental project that would develop allotments for use by local people.
Drumquin Development Association is currently seeking funding for the proposal.
They are hoping to build two polytunnels and external beds to provide planting space for up to 30 people/families/groups.
Mairead Taggart, secretary of the association, said they have been approached by local people seeking for outdoor space that will allow them to carry out activities in a safe environment.
“The allotments have been discussed in length with various groups and each group is in support of this venture within the village,” she said.
“The village as a whole will benefit for many years to come.
“A ‘Drumquin in Bloom’ scheme would see a village group flowering plants and making window boxes and hanging baskets.
“This project will also address health and wellbeing by encouraging people to come outside and get involved in growing their own food and plants and also growing produce to sell, thus creating an income.”
The Drumquin Development Association has recently received a grant to build a foundation programme for the allotments which is currently being rolled out through the local schools.
Children will receive gardening packs and instructions on how
to grow flowers, fruit and vegetables. “We are providing wildflower seeds which will bring wildlife and insects to the area, teaching the children about the importance of bringing wildlife and insects
into the garden,” continued Mairead.
“We are also providing fruit and vegetable seeds and plants to encourage self-sustainability and healthy eating.”
The development association’s funding bid is to be supported by Fermanagh and Omagh District Council, who discussed the proposal at a meeting this week.
It is hoped that the allotment can be planned in an area within the village and, if funding is made available, the scheme will commence this spring.
