REMEMBRANCE Sunday commemorations were held in towns and villages across Tyrone yesterday, but on a much smaller scale than normal due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Omagh branch of the Royal British Legion (RBL) did not hold its traditional Remembrance Day parade through the town because of the restrictions currently in place across the North, which mean that no more than 15 people can attend an outdoor gathering.
Instead, there was a small ceremony at the town’s cenotaph at 11am.
Among those to lay wreaths in Omagh were Robert Scott, the Lord Lieutenant of Tyrone, and Chris Smyth, the chairman of Fermanagh and Omagh District Council.
Afterwards, Mr Smyth posted on social media, “A different service this year but regardless, it’s vital that we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice so that we have the freedoms that we enjoy today.”
Similar small-scale events took place around the county throughout Sunday. Yesterday afternoon, a post on the Dungannon/ Moy Royal British Legion
Facebook page stated, “A very different Remembrance morning for us all. We remember all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Also thinking of those families left behind. Lest we forget.”
