Sex offender who previously avoided jail admits similar offences

A CONVICTED sex offender who avoided prison in 2022 for possessing a hoard of indecent child images has admitted multiple similar charges, which were committed while he was subject to a Probation Order and a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO).

Gavin O’Kane (34), whose address was given as Market Street in Omagh, but remanded in custody since his latest arrest in August 2023, admitted 18 charges, comprising ten counts of possessing indecent images and five counts of distributing them to others.

He admitted breaching a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) by using a remote media storage device, as well as possessing quantities of cocaine and cannabis.

Offending occurred on various dates between July 24 and August 3.

O’Kane appeared in the dock of Dungannon Crown Court, pleading guilty to each charge in turn.

Judge Fiona Bagnall ordered pre-sentence reports to be prepared while the defence indicated additional psychiatric assessments are likely to be sought.

She remanded O’Kane in continuing custody to be produced for sentencing on May 14.
