Susan ‘delighted’ with support for charity virtual run

AN inspiring Castlederg woman has raised over £6,000 for a cancer charity after completing a gruelling 13 mile virtual run.

Susan Young, secretary of the Castlederg Cancer Research Committee, finished the Virtual Great North Run recently in aid of Cancer Research UK.

She has raised £6,100 to date, and donations are still coming in.

The cancer charity has been hit dramatically by Covid-19 as all fundraising efforts are on hold.

Normally the Castlederg Committee of Cancer Research UK raise a staggering £30,000 each year and the group was well on target to hit the £1 million mark in 2020.

As secretary of the local committee, Susan was determined not to let Covid hold her back and she completed the 13.1 mile Great North Run Re-imagined in two hours, 14 minutes and 22 seconds.

Susan explained, “I am absolutely delighted with the money raised and how the run went.

“It was a beautiful morning and I had support throughout the route from neighbours cheering me on.

“It was different from the three previous Great North Runs I have completed but I downloaded the virtual App and had some famous athletes inspiring me along, including my idol Mo Farrah!” said Susan.

Susan was greeted by her family and members of the local committee on completion of the 13.1 miles at her home in Castlederg.

She has been blown away by the support she has received and the money raised.

“I am so grateful for the support of my family, committee members, neighbours, running friends and the Castlederg and wider community.

“Together we can beat cancer.

“On behalf of the committee, please stay safe and well during this difficult time,” concluded Susan.
