Two-in-a -row success for Omagh kebab shop

A KEBAB shop in Omagh has been named as the best in the North for the second year running.

After tasting sweet title-winning success 12 months before, Gavin Chism, owner of Grab A Kebab, was jubilant that, once again, his takeaway won the local category at the British Kebab Awards.

The Dromore Road premises was one of 20 establishments vying for the title of Best Kebab House in Northern Ireland 2021.

Posting on the Grab A Kebab Facebook page, Mr Chism said, “She’s coming back to Tyrone. We won Best Kebab Shop Northern Ireland. Again!

“Absolutely delighted. Big thank you to everyone who voted for us. I’m absolutely buzzing. A special thanks to all the staff for their hard work and dedication. We couldn’t have done it without you.”

Having won the 2020 award, Mr Chism had been quietly confident of making it two-in-a-row, but needed the support of local people to make it happen.Speaking to the UH earlier this year, he said, “21’s my lucky number, so I’m hoping it rubs off.”

It certainly did!

This year’s British Kebab Awards, in their ninth year, attracted a record-breaking numbers of entries. They recognise and champion the efforts of local kebab takeaways and restaurants across the UK.

There are currently around 20,000 kebab outlets in the UK, supporting around 200,000 jobs.

The kebab industry normally brings in more than £2.8 billion a year to the British economy, with more than 1.5m kebabs sold across Britain every day.

There are also approximately 200 doner kebab manufacturers in the UK, with an annual turnover in excess of £750m.
