Work to start on A5 resurfacing scheme

WORK on a resurfacing scheme on a busy stretch of the A5 just outside Ballygawley was due to begin this morning (Monday) and is likely to lead to traffic delays and queues.

One lane of the road between Shantavney Road and Glencull Road will be closed from 8am today, July 27, until 6pm on Saturday September 5 and a 40mph speed limit, the banning of overtaking will be in place.

In addition, a 10mph speed limit will also apply during the works through the use of a convoy system.

There will also be a full road closure in place from 6am on Saturday August 8 until 6am on Monday August 10, when there will be a signed diversion in place via the A4 Ballygawley Road, through Clogher, Augher, Fivemiletown, Enniskillen, Irvinestown and Dromore back to Omagh.

This diversion for those three days at the weekend could result in an additional journey length of some 60 miles for those travelling to Omagh and the north west.

Fermanagh and South Tyrone MP, Michelle Gildernew, welcomed the scheme which she said would benefit the thousands of motorists who are using the A5 on a daily basis.

“The scheme will be of great benefit to the local community and will help improve transport connections for people, goods and services,” she said.

“Work is due to start on Monday and motorists should be aware that delays may occur and that additional time should be allowed when planning any journeys.

“Sinn Fein will continue to lobby for increased investment in the infrastructure of our roads to maximise road safety and help grow the local economy.”
