Dean Maguirc 2-8 St.Pius X 2-13
WITH six minutes left to play at the Eire Og Hurling field in Carrickmore it looked as though Dean Maguirc Carrickmore were going to book their place in the quarter finals of the Danske Bank MacLarnon Cup but their opponents St.Pius X Magherafelt struck for two late goals to win the day.
It was a contest that ebbed and flowed with the Dean finding themselves six points in arrears in the third quarter and in big trouble.
They knuckled down though and enjoyed their best spell of the game to turn things around to lead by three but with the finishing line in sight they just couldn’t see out the win.
The Derry lads looked the likely winners for long periods of the game with the superb Oisin Doherty to the fore in the scoring stakes helping himself to 1-10.
Ahead by two points at the break they moved six clear on the restart but then Dean Maguirc hit back to get their noses in front only to be
pipped at the post by those two late majors.
Doherty kicked the opening three points of the game but by the 18th minute Dean Maguirc College were in front thanks to points from Kevin Cuddy (3) and Shea Munroe. It was that man Doherty though who closed out the half with another trio of scores, two of which were frees, to enable his side to lead 0-6 to 0-4 at the break.
Within a dozen minutes of the restart Doherty (2) as well as Callum Gribbon and Padraig Donaghy had added to their advantage before the Dean mounted a comeback.
Sean Og Teague and substitute Odhran Curran had points either side of Munroe driving through the St.Pius X defence to find the net in the 45th minute.
Cathal Scullion responded with a point for the Magherafelt School but Teague cancelled that out before Davan Loughran got the Dean’s second major of the night.
Curran tagged on a point to put his side three clear with seven minutes left on the clock but that proved to be their last score as St.Pius X Magherafelt upped the tempo. Another Doherty brace closed the gap to the minimum before substitute Scullion found the net in the 59th minute.
That score edged the Derry lads in front and moments later they made sure of their place in the last eight when Doherty also scored a goal.
