BOTH teams played their hearts out in last night’s LCC Group Tyrone Intermediate Championship first-round clash at Newtownstewart, but Gortin got a second wind to finish strongly and claim a 1-19 to 1-13 victory against Owen Roes.
Late points from Sean Og McAleer, Shane Clarke, Sean McKenna and Eoghan McGarvey opened daylight between the teams after a breathless match which finished in extra-time.
Gortin edged a nip and tuck first-half by 0-6 to 0-5, but they seized the advantage in the second-half when Ciaran Brolly hit the net.
Gerard Devine kept Owen Roes in proceedings with a couple of points from play, and they rocked Gortin with a goal deep, deep in injury time from Niall McAleer which sent the game into extra-time.
Usually the team which pushes the game into extra-time has the psychological advantage, so all credit Gortin who answered all the questions asked of them as the game reached a spell-binding conclusion.
There were three other quarter-finals on yesterday (Sunday) as well; as expected, Eglish accounted for Naomh Eoghan while Edendork overcame a slow start to swat aside Clogher by 2-15 to 1-6. Beragh were pushed all the way by Augher but claimed a 0-10 to 0-8 victory to set up a huge quarter-final clash against neighbours Tattyreagh.
Quarter-finals
Tattyreagh v Beragh
Rock v Edendork
Aghaloo v Greencastle
Eglish v Gortin
