Activists make Irish unity stance in Omagh

ACTIVISTS committed to the reunification of Ireland assembled outside Omagh courthouse on Sunday evening to signal their belief that the days of partition are drawing to an end.

Many of those in attendance were affiliates of Sinn Fein, most notably Declan McAleer MLA and Órfhlaith Begley MP.

Speaking after the event, Mr McAleer said, ‘’The debate on the future of this island is alive and gaining momentum each and every day.

‘’I was delighted to stand alongside activists here today to highlight the need to plan for unity and to encourage further discussions across all sections of society.”

Mr McAleer emphasised that any vision for a new, reunited Ireland, must be one in which everyone has their place.

‘’Across the island, more and more people are talking about a new and united Ireland and there is a place for everyone in this open dialogue. No one should have anything to fear from the conversation.

‘’Change is coming and now is the time to prepare for it. It is now time for the Irish government to establish a national Citizens’ Assembly to discuss the future of Ireland.

‘’Both the British and Irish governments need to set a date for the Referendum on Irish Unity.’’
