A SPECIAL book of poetry written by the late Stephen Garry, a much-loved Tyrone creative, has been released during a recent charity concert which took place in his memory.
Crowds flocked to St Patrick’s Hall in Dromore on Saturday to enjoy the ‘Stephen Garry Memorial Variety Concert’ which featured a number of talent musicians from across the country in aid of the Rapid Response Unit, Omagh and Northwest Cancer Centre, Derry. The event was organised by the Garry family from Trillick, who have raised a fantastic total of £10,000 and counting, and donations can still be made online.
Headlining the entertainment was Dinie Leonard, who is renowned for his commitment to Irish traditional music.
Recent ‘Glór Tíre’ and former Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann champion, Patrick Treacy, also entertained audiences alongside popular Trillick musician Ronan Warnock and performances by the impressive Dromore and Trillick CCÉ.
The night further featured recitation, fabulous set dancing, and the release of Stephen Garry’s self-penned book of poetry, all about local characters and well-known areas.
Speaking to the Ulster Herald, Catriona (née Garry), who lives in Dromore, said that the night ‘was just brilliant’.
“It was so enjoyable,” she said. “The event was very well-supported by people from both Dromore and Trillick and surrounding areas.
“Everyone seemed to have a wonderful time, and I don’t think we could have fitted anyone else in the hall!”
Catriona continued by explaining that the fundraising concert was the first of three events that the Garry family are holding in Stephen’s memory.
“The second event will be a ‘Blood Donation Day’,” Catriona described.
“This will take place at Trillick Leisure Centre on June 20 from 12.30pm to 7pm. It will be the first event of its kind in Trillick.
“The third and final event,” Catriona added. “Will be a tractor and vintage car run in Trillick in the summertime. We’ll confirm the exact date soon!”
