Residents demand action to stop vehicles speeding through village

A GROUP of concerned residents from Douglas Bridge has called for urgent action to tackle rising traffic volumes and dangerous speeding through their village.

The issue was the focus of a community meeting held at Douglas Bridge Community Centre, where members of the Douglas Bridge Community Association met with Sinn Féin councillors Antaine Ó Fearghail and Brian Harte to voice their concerns.

“The village has grown significantly since the pandemic, and there are far more vehicles passing through now,” said a spokesperson for the Community Association. “We’re especially worried about the road beside the play park, where drivers have been seen going well over the speed limit. If something isn’t done soon, someone could be seriously hurt.”

The councillors listened to residents’ concerns and pledged to take action.

Cllr Brian Harte described the meeting as ‘very positive’ and said he and Cllr Ó Fearghail would work closely with the community to push for solutions.

“I’ll be writing to the Department for Infrastructure to seek a long-term solution and request a road survey,” said Cllr Harte.

“We’ll also be speaking with the Policing and Community Safety Partnership about installing measures such as speed indicator devices to address this issue.”

Residents hope the renewed attention from local representatives will bring meaningful change and make the village safer for all.
