Tummery Athletic 0
Enniskillen Town 2
Midfield pairing Ryan Hanna and Conall Quinn grabbed the goals as Enniskillen Town United moved joint second in the Division One table with hard fought victory at a chilly Crawford’s Lane on Saturday..
Hanna, the Town player-manager, – a role he previously held at Tummery – broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time and Quinn wrapped things up with a second late in the second half.
In truth, Town were decent value for the win although things could have been oh so different had the hosts not had a goal controversially ruled out while the game was still scoreless.
Tummery were incensed when a side-footed volley by James Garrity was ruled out by the referee, the home side, with some justification, pointing out that Town defender Haydn Love was goal side of the attacker when their player guided the ball into the net past Ben Thompson.
That seemed a key moment in turgid battle and even more so when shortly afterwards Hanna opened the scoring for the visitors.
Outside the goals there were few moments of genuine quality on a soft playing surface which deteriorated somewhat in the second half.
All told it wasn’t a day for the faint-hearted, and, perhaps not surprisingly, it was the visitors that made the early running with Dan O’Connor having a shot blocked before Quinn’s curling effort from an acute angle was well saved by Nathan Hunter.
The Tumms keeper then denied O’Connor with Lee Brennan’s follow-up blocked by a defender.
Moments later, Brennan failed to get a clean connection on the most inviting of crosses from Darren Freeman who had dashed clear on the left.
In between those opportunities Town keeper Thompson scrambled back to stop the ball crossing his line after Ciaran Beacom’s searching free kick had glanced off Michael Simpson’s head.
Then on the half hour mark there was uproar from Tummery when the match official chalked off what they claimed was a perfectly good goal by Garrity.
Town responded from the let-off with Hunter pulling off an excellent stop to thwart Hanna after good play by Freeman on the left.
Tummery failed to heed that particular warning and when the same pairing combined just moments later Hanna forced the ball home at the near post.
The second period wasn’t quite as eventful. The first real opportunity fell to Town’s O’Connor who had an effort blocked by a defender after good play by Brendan Lilley and Quinn on the left.
The hosts’ best chance of equaliser arrived when Town keeper Thompson pushed a wicked cross from Padraig Dillon into the path of Ciaran Beacom but the big defender’s goalbound attempt was diverted wide by a defender’s boot.
Back at the other end, Hunter pulled off a flying stop to thwart the excellent O’Connor after he had been threaded down the right by Brennan.
From the resultant corner Tummery only partially cleared their lines and when the ball broke to Quinn he hammered a rising shot inside Hunter’s left upright from just outside the 18-yard box.
