Big wins for Tyrone at rural community awards

THERE were some big wins for groups and individuals from west Tyrone at this year’s Housing Executive’s Rural Community Awards.

Rouskey Community and Development Association secured a £1,000 prize after topping the ‘Cleaner and Greener’ section, while Sally Mulholland, chair of Fox Park Residents Association outside Omagh, received a £500 prize when she was named ‘Community Champion’.

Situated in the hinterland of Omagh, Rouskey Community and Development Association promotes sustainable living through organic gardening practices and rainwater harvesting, as well as offering an array of health and well-being activities to all members of the community.

Kevin Moquin, Rouskey Community and Development Association committee member, said, “A lot work has gone into improving the grounds at our community centre, creating stunning art murals around the site, extending our community garden and building a new polytunnel.

“We have been able to encourage people of all ages, including Housing Executive tenants, to engage in our workshops which include gardening, music, crocheting, cookery, literacy and heritage.”

Meanwhile, after receiving her honour, Sally, who has served as chair of Fox Park Residents Association for 23 years, said, “Community means everything to me.

“I just love to see people happy and content living in their own space.

“ I was very surprised getting the letter to say I had won the award.

“I would never be looking an award, but I’m chuffed to bits that I got it.”
