There are those who view a job, simply as a way to fund your lifestyle and not as something that you should be particularly passionate about. However, there are also those who see their job as something that should be your reason for getting up in the morning. They bounce out of bed full of excitement about the day ahead and the prospects that may present themselves.
If you find yourself dragging your feet to the office, and feeling as if you’re going through the motions, it may be time for a move. Perhaps you feel as though every day has become monotonous and merged into one greyish blur. Or maybe it’s the people you work with and the office politics that is getting you down.
Whatever the reasons, it is important to be aware of the signs that you’re ready to move on, which may be more obvious for some rather than others.
You Lack Passion – You’re not waking up every morning and looking forward to getting into work. Obviously there are days when we’d rather be on the sofa, but they should be few and far between. If most days you find yourself dreading going into the office and not wanting to spend your time in work, the passion has faded and it may be time to make a change.
You Dislike Your Colleagues – If you find yourself avoiding your colleagues like the plague, and you prefer to take your lunch breaks alone rather than engage them in conversation, then it may be the office politics that is the problem. Friction between colleagues in the workplace can be one of the most mentally and emotionally exhausting things. It distracts you from your work and can be detrimental to your productivity.
Constant Stress – If you find yourself being constantly stressed while at work, or you spend a lot of your leisure time being stressed about work then there’s a very good chance that it’s time to move on. Work, although difficult at times should not be a massive source of stress on a constant basis.
Your Performance Is Suffering – A drop in productivity is one of the biggest indicators that your work situation has become stale. When we lose passion we lose interest, and when we lose interest we under perform. We know we’re capable of doing the work, but find it difficult to focus on the tasks we need to or to put the work in we did previously. This is a massive signal that something in your working life needs to change.
Your Efforts Go Unnoticed – Even when you put in your best efforts it goes completely unnoticed. You’re constantly passed over for promotions or any attempt to take on more challenging tasks are rejected. You feel as though you get no thanks for your efforts, and your skills are not being used, despite your best efforts to change that. Gratification, although it may seem juvenile, is one of the most important things to an employee.
You’re Bored – You shouldn’t be bored in work. Obviously there will be times when things are not that exciting and your day can seem to drag. However, this should not be a regular occurrence. You should be stimulated in work and be able to notice your professional growth, and the acquisition of new skills.
