Charity disco organised in memory of popular Strabane man

A fundraising disco will be held in Strabane on Saturday night in memory of a much-loved Strabane man.

The popular ‘70s/‘80s for Aiden disco night will return to the Fir Trees Hotel what promises to be another unforgettable evening of music, memories, and community spirit.

Now in its ninth year, the event is held in memory of Aiden McAteer, who sadly passed away in February 2014 following a brave battle with leukaemia. Over the years, the night has grown to become a highlight on the local social calendar, raising vital funds for Leukaemia & Lymphoma NI.

“Throughout his illness and treatment, Aiden’s attitude and positive spirit never faltered,” said event organiser Michael Ferry. “That legendary smile was forever present as he greeted people just like he always did. His positivity is a lasting memory that continues to inspire.”

Aiden, who worked in numerous establishments around Strabane, was a familiar face in the town and had a wide circle of friends both locally and further afield.

“Simply put, he knew everybody and everybody knew him,” said Michael. “And anybody who really knew Aiden knew that he liked all things 1980s.”

That passion for the decade’s music and culture became the foundation for the first ‘80s for Aiden’ night, which was organised by Michael alongside Aiden’s family.

The event has since evolved to include music from the 1970s as well, opening the door to a broader musical set and some fabulously flamboyant fancy dress.

In recent years, the blend of ABBA glam, disco dazzle, and punk swagger from the ’70s has gone head-to-head with the bold, extravagant fashions of the ’80s. While dressing up is encouraged, it’s far from mandatory.

“Fancy dress is not essential; everyone is more than welcome to come along and enjoy a great night’s music, all for a great cause and in memory of a local gentleman who is still dearly loved and missed,” said Michael.

As always, there will be raffles, prizes, and a £5 admission fee on the night, with a prize for best outfit adding to the fun.

Beyond the dancing and celebration, the night also offers an opportunity to remember loved ones who have been affected by blood cancer and to support a charity making a real difference.
