Coalisland charity cycle for mental health exceeds all expectations

A COALISLAND man has raised over £1,500 for the mental health charity AWARE by completing an extreme fitness challenge.

Stefan Smith cycled for 24 hours in a challenge that he says has been inspired by his own experience of mental health. His original target was £500 but the donations have flooded in.

He said, “I want to encourage people not to be afraid to open up to someone.

“There’s nothing wrong with having a mental illness, and no matter what, there is always a reason for you to be here, and good things will happen to you; just dig deep and get the help you need.”

On completing the epic cycle, Stefan said, “At the beginning I had loads of gym members in and the place was pumping and the atmosphere was great. However in the early hours of the morning it got very tough due to the impact the cycling had on my body physically and mentally. Coming up to the finish I had another huge crowd to get me over the line which was greatly appreciated. A day later my body feels drained, sore and tight but if I’m honest it was all worth it!”

Thanking all those who donated, he added, “It is a unbelievable amount! I’m absolutely mind blown and over the moon with the amount I’ve raised.

“I am just over the moon and emotional in a good way that I’ve raised so much money that’s potentially going to save a few people’s lives with the help of AWARE NI and their programs.”
