‘Flame of Hope’ for cancer research volunteers who raised £1m

THE ‘Flame of Hope’ award was presented to the Castlederg Cancer Research committee yesterday (Wednesday) for their ‘remarkable’ fundraising efforts across the years.

The dedicated group of volunteers, which has held its place in the community since 1966, has raised over £1 million for Cancer Research UK.

The ‘Flame of Hope’ is an award to thank most outstanding volunteers who go above and beyond the call of duty to help beat cancer.

Before presenting the group with their award, which took place in the Silverbirch Hotel, Cancer Research UK representative, Lisa Bailey, said, “The Castlederg committee is a remarkable group of individuals who have been making a positive impact on their community for over 50 years.

“What started with just four ladies hosting a bazaar in a cattle shed has now become a thriving organisation that recently celebrated a remarkable milestone of raising £1 million in 2022. At the forefront of this exceptional committee is Milton Porter, a driven leader who has been guiding the team since the passing of his beloved wife to cancer.”

The charity’s representative added, “The dedication and hard work of the Castlederg committee is truly admirable. Their consistent success is a testament to their passion for making a difference and their ability to engage the community in their endeavours. They have not only raised significant funds but have also fostered a sense of togetherness and camaraderie within their community.”

Cancer Research Castlederg committee chair, Mr Porter, voiced the pride of the entire group at receiving the award when he said, “It’s unbelievable.”

“Receiving the Flame of Hope award is fabulous, but the most fabulous thing was getting to £1 million. Getting to that target was something which was wonderful. In small, rural area like Castlederg, we have very few high earning people but very generous people. So to me that was really wonderful for the area,” he said.

“Everyone knows somebody who has been affected by cancer so no family misses when it comes to donations.”

Mr Porter also paid tribute to Ivy Carlin, a treasurer within the group who passed away last week.

“Unfortunately we have lost some committee members over the years,” he said.

“We lost a very good lady last week, Ivy Carlin, who was a terrific supporter and treasurer of our group and a joy to work with – we had such fun.”
