Knockavoe students are ‘Walking on Sunshine’

PUPILS and staff of a Tyrone school for children with learning difficulties are excitedly looking forward to a production in the Alley Theatre this May.

The show, ‘Walking on Sunshine’, will showcase all the talent that Knockavoe have to offer and is part of a wider campaign to pay for the training and upkeep of a school support dog, Póga.

Póga, who has already helped a non-verbal child with autism speak for the first time, has been with the school since Christmas time. He lives with Knockavoe School teacher, Ciara McLaughlin and her family in Newtownstewart.

Speaking to the Strabane Chronicle about the upcoming show, Ciara said, “To celebrate the arrival and impact Póga has had on our whole school community we wanted to showcase our amazing pupils in a night filled with music, song and dance.

“Every pupil will be showcased throughout this celebration in different forms including words, drawings, Makaton signing, and much more.”

Ciara shared the wealth of continuous support offered by the local community.

“Our local friends and families support all of our fundraising efforts in a period where budget cuts and funding is greatly impacted and once again the local businesses of our town and beyond are very supportive – donating many amazing prizes which will be up for grabs in our raffle,” added Ciara.

Ciara expressed her gratitude toward charity, Assistance Dogs NI, for bringing Póga into the school’s life.

“I am beyond amazed at the impact Póga has had on the whole school since his arrival – he has brought endless benefits to our pupils.

“I will be forever grateful to Assistance Dogs NI, they are one of those charities who go above and beyond and deserve all the recognition for the work they do for many people.”
