New Junior Parkrun will help young people get active

A NEW Junior Parkrun is set to be established in Omagh.

The town already boasts a popular Saturday morning Parkrun, which attracts large crowds each week to complete a 5K course from Omagh Leisure Complex to Arleston Park.

Now, Athletics NI and the local volunteers have contacted Fermanagh and Omagh District Council with a view to starting an event for younger people.

The Junior Parkrun is open to children aged from four to 14 with a slightly shorter route at 2km.

A Junior Parkrun has been taking place in Enniskillen for the past five years and has attracted 700 participants and 243 volunteers since 2018.

At a meeting last night (Wednesday), Fermanagh and Omagh District Council was set to allocate a budget of £3,000 to help develop a Junior Parkrun in Omagh.

This money will be used to assist with the purchase of a defibrillator and first aid kit, signage, setup of a dedicated website, volunteer training and support and other associated expenditure.

Further plans for the event are expected to be revealed in the coming weeks.
