Omagh man’s charity challenge in memory of brother raises £1,100

AN Omagh man took part in a spirited marathon challenge in memory of his brother has helped to raise £1,100 – and counting – for sufferers of rare, genetic and life-limiting conditions.

Stephen McCawille spent his Saturday running a 400m route at Chalk Fitness, Omagh an impressive 105 times to clock up a total of 26.2 miles – the equivalent of a full marathon – in aid of ‘The Society For Mucopolysaccharide Diseases’ (The MPS Society) and to honour his late brother, Shaun. The Society provides professional support to children, adults and families affected by MPS, fabry and related lysosomal storage diseases; and funds research into treatment and therapies, while helping families and carers support individuals with complex needs.

Speaking to the Tyrone Herald Stephen said that ‘fun’ was too strong a word to describe how he fared with his energetic escapades – but he is certainly glad that it’s over and done with!

“It was challenging – especially since it was just the same 400 metre route ad nauseam,” he described. “But my gym was great. The good folks at Chalk FItness helped me out, and I had people running with me, and raising funds by promoting the marathon on Facebook, such as my sister, Michelle. I’ve done a few marathons, but this is the most I have ever raised so far.”

Stephen’s marathon challenge was originally supposed to take place in La Palma, Spain, but unfortunately, due to an eruption of a volcano there, lava was cast over the well-intentioned plans.

“Most charities have taken a significant hit during the pandemic, which has directly impacted their day-to-day operations, and drastically limiting their services, so it was important that I still undertook my challenge,” he added. “There was even a donation box for me in the gym.

“I can’t thank everyone enough for the support they have given me so far, and I am forever grateful to everyone who has donated,” Stephen concluded. “The whole community spirit has definitely made the while experience more enjoyable. Even though the challenge is completed, my fundraiser is still open as every little helps.”
