Rachel McHugh is a lecturer at Ulster University, and a senior psychological wellbeing practitioner of Spamount. She is also the daughter – and biggest fan – of Liam McHugh, who is a marathon runner, who has raised nearly £300,000 for cystic fibrosis research over the last 28 years.
What is your least appealing habit?
I love a good nap!
What is your greatest trait?
I think I am very strong willed and determined.
Did you have a role model as a youth?
My parents, and also my A level teacher Mrs McHugh. I definitely don’t think I would be where I am now in my career without meeting her. She inspired me to keep working hard to reach my goals.
How would you describe Tyrone to someone who has never been here before?
Pretty, green and laid back.
What are you watching on television?
I loved Game of Thrones but currently Selling Sunset at the moment, and I am looking forward to watching the final season of Money Heist on Netflix this week.
Tell us a song that reminds you of your childhood?
.Anything by S Club 7 or the Spice Girls.
Who is your favourite musician?
I love Dermot Kennedy, and I have also been a big McFly fan since I was a teenager.
What is your favourite film?
The Greatest Showman, Marley and Me or Seven Pounds.
What is your favourite memory?
I have some amazing childhood memories in Rossnowlagh where I spent my summers, and still do. Also, my favourite holiday which, was in Cavtat and Dubrovnik in Croatia.
What makes you angry?
Seeing people being treated unfairly, or not getting the help that they need.
Has there been a defining moment in your life that has got you to where you are today?
I think when I was doing my MSc and qualified to work with people who suffer from mental health issues. I just knew that it was something that I wanted to do and I learned so much about myself, and how to help others.
What is your most treasured possession?
My dogs.
Do you have a catchphrase?
A dear friend of mine used to always say that ‘everything happens for a reason’.
Who would play you in a film of your life?
I would love it to be Lily Collins.
What has been your greatest achievement?
Definitely passing my doctorate, and starting my dream job lecturing at Ulster University.
What is your life’s motto?
I try my best to let go of what I cannot control, because focusing on it and worrying about it doesn’t stop things from happening or make anything happen. I try to focus on what I can do or control in a situation instead, and give up control of the rest. I also think what is for you, won’t pass you.
